For Joseph and his three older brothers, sports practices and games keep the Martin family on the go.
Joseph has Spina Bifida, a congenital condition causing paralysis from the waist down. He and his family were introduced to NSM ATP, Zach Stewart, in 2017.
“Prior to working with Zach and NSM, we had issues getting proper equipment,” said Shannon Martin, Joseph’s mom. “So, our therapist suggested Zach. He has great ideas.”
Joseph’s love for sports led him to play basketball through Nashville-based organization, Able Youth for two years, and recently, he began playing sled hockey for the Junior Sled Preds in Nashville, a team made possible by the National Wheelcats, an organization providing sports activities for individuals with physical disabilities for 60 years.
“The Sled Preds have two adult leagues and a junior league,” said Shannon. “He loves it, and he loves being around the other kids. He’s focusing on that at the moment.”
The Sled Preds host a tournament in Nashville in April, and practice weekly on Sunday afternoons.
Joseph attended a Nashville Predators game for his 8th birthday where he was able to meet some of the players. In addition to cheering on the Predators, Joseph is also a fan of the Florida Gators.
